Gasoline Demand Is At An 18 Month High

The Business Insider -- Maybe all the talk about peak gasoline is bunk. With the price of gas low, and peak driving season upon us, Mastercard reports that U.S. gasoline consumption was the highest it's been in a year and a half:

Bloomberg: Motorists bought an average 9.695 million barrels of gasoline a day in the week ended June 26, MasterCard, the second-biggest credit-card company, said in its weekly SpendingPulse report. That’s 1.6 percent above a year earlier and the most since the week ended Dec. 21, 2007.

18 months ago, is about when the Bush depression started. So increased demand means (to me), that economy is not tanking as fast and maybe slightly recovering, in some sectors.

WTF are they talking about? Just saw a report reciently saying that gas consumption was at record lows. I dont think they have a clue on it. They must have a lot of stocks in oil futures & are trying drive up prices.

Let's see - the latest report was that unemployment is now at a 26- YEAR high, but this article says we are all flitting around the countryside, spending lots of money on gasoline???

It makes more sense to believe that without jobs, many folks are charging their gas purchases instead of using cash.

A crazy report like this is all it will take for stations to jack up their pump prices. It doesn't seem to matter whether crude is up or down. The pumps only go up.

and what the hell does Mastercard know about gas....judging by the prices of just under (by a penny or two here) $4 a gallon last summer, demand should have been at an all time high on 7/6/2008 when oil was $147 a barrel.....so....who's lying now....and why???

That is absolutely not true because they are just counting on their credit card customers.

A lot of gas is sold and paid for with cash and other credit cards.

This is just another form of speculation on Master Cards part.

As long as prices stay high, I will not travel anywhere.

I strongly feel that if the prices were lower, more people would be inclined to travel more.

This is just pure bull by CitiBank and other Master Card issuers to give a PR goost to our economy. Price of gas is hardly low for the poor state of this economy! Do any of you know anyone doing more driving than they absolutely must do?

There were two motorist in New York this week from Pennsylvania that State Troopers said robbed a gas station and might have gotten away if they had not also fuelled up.

If MasterCard is the second biggest credit-card; what is the biggest and why are prices starting to fall with all this consumption.

With gas prices the way they are now, people can't resist driving more because when prices do go back up, there may not be another chance for a while.

prices are lower than last year, so a small uptick in consumption this time of year is no real surprise. We still need to conserve.

Hazelnut -> "Duhhh! People lost their jobs and credit card usage is currently high which reflects the demand of credit card usage. Not a very bright guy working for Mastercard here. In another 6 months they won't report on credit card defaults due to buying gasoline."

The article states: " Mastercard reports that U.S. gasoline consumption was the highest it's been in a year and a half"

I am calling BS on this, I don't buy this for a second. Stop grasping at any reason possible to rationalize irrational fuel pricing.

This report is bs - if you buy cokes, candy, anything else at a convenience store it shows up as auto expense, at least on my statement it does. They don't know if they are paying for gas or candy.

There is absolutely no consistency in reporting. Some experts have us driving less while others have us driving more. What is the true story. No one will ever know. That is why they can jerk us around at the pump.

and what makes mastercard (another ripoff industry) and expert in knowing how much gas was purchased???? they probably speculated in the industry and needs prices to go up.

The numbers are skewed because of the excessively high prices last summer and the fall they took thereafter. Still haven't seen any real reason other than speculation for the price runup since the first of the year.

Mastercard, another expert heard from.
The Wall Street Journal and AAA both have said that driving is down from prior years. And last summer prices were so high($4.00 a gal) people just couldn't afford to go very far.
Check with the resorts or places like Disney and the amusement parks. They're the true indicators of travel and they are having all kinds of financial problems.

While I continue to conserve and plan my driving trips, I can't reduce my personal demand anymore...unless I start walking. So I do my part to conserve and reduce my carbon footprint. Why demand is going up...with the economy the way it currently is...I have no idea. It's a conspiracy I say...LOL.
