But will they also sue every other automaker that has had serious safety related issues in the past?

The BBC reports this? Where are the DOTs and the NTSB? Or for that matter the U.S. Congress? Oh that's right they are investigating.

Everyone already responding are right. The safety of the driver is not the reason for this. It's about the lawyers lining their pockets.

Good that California did that, and only if it was truly for the people. I say that because you know some lawmakers and attorneys will get their pockets filled.

Got my recall work done today.

Seems I have to put more pressure on the gas pedal for I think they added another spring or two on the gas pedal besides installing a steel plate.

I'll have to sue them if my right ankle gives me problems. LMAO

And what is California going to receive from this law suit?

Could they be as responsible for these "defects" as they claim Toyota to be.

Could their consumer protection agency have ben NEGLIGENT in detecting these "flaws"?

Could this just be a SCAM by a government agency to generate revenue at the expense of Toyota, and eventually, the consumer?

On the face of it this is a slam dunk.

Toyota already admitted they have a problem, can't fix it and have the documents to prove that they knew of the problem years ago.

Oh yeah, they said they were sorry!

Let's not just discuss oil/gas prices as navyeod states....we know they're bogus anyway...at least north of the border here.
So a whole state sue Toyota...does any of the dead or injured get any money out of this???
It is true that Toyota did try to hide the fact, at least suspected the issue (even they didn't want to read their black boxes to find out for sure). They also did the same back in 92 (deny till could deny no longer, then recall) but that was much fewer vehicles.

Personally, think many such reports are likely driver error (like back in Audi's case) but they do have an issue & did not want to own up in order to rectify (unlike NA brands whose used to recalls now...no loss of face during recall there). Then many of such incidents should be able to be handled easily by shifting into neutral...some extenuating examples have been given though.

Also read class action suit suing for increased depreciation...you really can sue for anything in US after I saw that one. So buy any mfgrs model that doesn't catch on with masses, its worth less in 4-5 yrs so you should be able to sue based on this premise.

With all this, Toyota may have to be bankrupted, bailed out (hopefully only by Japan) & come back named after its owner Toyoda.

Toyota's arrogance and lack of accountability will destroy their once invincible reputation. Instead of paying attention to their problems and taking care of their customers, they are spending the money bombarding us with their testimonial ads. Shame on Toyota.

Hey, California needs the money. Plus Toyota is shutting down NUMMI and sending those California jobs to Canada, Japan, and , oh yes, Texas. Toyota has been dragging its feet since 2002 or 2003. They deserve what they get. Over 30 people have DIED with these problem Toyotas.
